NUMU

Numu (Noo-Moo): “human being”

Numu

Numu territory spans much of the Western Great Basin and most of what is today known as Nevada. The Numu is a broad range of peoples, composed of nearly 30 different bands spanning the Great Basin. Because of this, they have a diverse range of dialects unique to each band. Creation stories vary between each tribe, as well.

Great strides have been made to preserve Numu languages and dialects from not only the tribes but also from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and also the University of Nevada, Reno.
