“As the Wašiw creation story goes, the people were brought to their homeland surrounding Lake Tahoe by Gewe (the Coyote) and told that this is the place the Wašiw people were meant to be by Nentašu (Sky Grandmother). The center of the Wašiw world is Da ow aga (Lake Tahoe) both geographically and spiritually.” Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California.

The Wašiw people are a historically matriarchal tribe composed of 4 bands: Wehl-mel-ti (The Northern People), Pau-wah-lu (The Eastern People), Hung-ah-lel-ti (The Southern People), and Tahn-ah-lel-ti (The Western People). In the present day, the Wašiw tribe has 4 tribal communities: Carson Colony, Stewart Colony, Dresslerville Colony, and Woodfords Community.
